OverTheWire - Bandit - Level 16 to Level 18

Description:

[Level 16]

Level Goal
The password for the next level can be retrieved by submitting the password of the current level to a port on localhost in the range 31000 to 32000. First find out which of these ports have a server listening on them. Then find out which of those speak SSL and which don't. There is only 1 server that will give the next password, the others will simply send back to you whatever you send to it.
Commands you may need to solve this level
ssh, telnet, nc, openssl, s_client, nmap
Helpful Reading Material
Port scanner on Wikipedia
[Level 17]

Level Goal
There are 2 files in the homedirectory: passwords.old and passwords.new. The password for the next level is in passwords.new and is the only line that has been changed between passwords.old and passwords.new
Commands you may need to solve this level
cat, grep, ls
Solution:
  1. [Comment] Using SSH to connect the server
  2. sp@simple-plan:~|=> ssh bandit16@bandit.labs.overthewire.org
    ...
    bandit16@bandit.labs.overthewire.org's password: cluFn7wTiGryunymYOu4RcffSxQluehd
  3. [Comment] Using nmap to do port scanning
  4. bandit16@melinda:~$ nmap -sT localhost -p31000-32000

    Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-01-22 09:25 UTC
    Nmap scan report for localhost (127.0.0.1)
    Host is up (0.0013s latency).
    Not shown: 996 closed ports
    PORT      STATE SERVICE
    31046/tcp open  unknown
    31518/tcp open  unknown
    31691/tcp open  unknown
    31790/tcp open  unknown
    31960/tcp open  unknown
  5. [Comment] Testing open ports with netcat to filter the targets
  6. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo test | nc -v localhost 31046
    Connection to localhost 31046 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
    test
  7. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo test | nc -v localhost 31518
    Connection to localhost 31518 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
    ERROR
    140737354069664:error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number:s3_pkt.c:348:
  8. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo test | nc -v localhost 31691
    Connection to localhost 31691 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
    test
  9. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo test | nc -v localhost 31790
    Connection to localhost 31790 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
    ERROR
    140737354069664:error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number:s3_pkt.c:348:
  10. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo test | nc -v localhost 31960
    Connection to localhost 31960 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
    test
  11. [Comment] Now, we can focus on port 31518 and 31790.
  12. [Comment] Using openssl with s_client option to establish the communication
  13. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo cluFn7wTiGryunymYOu4RcffSxQluehd | openssl s_client -quiet -connect localhost:31518
    depth=0 CN = localhost
    verify error:num=18:self signed certificate
    verify return:1
    depth=0 CN = localhost
    verify return:1
    cluFn7wTiGryunymYOu4RcffSxQluehd
    ^C
  14. [Comment] There is no response from the service listening on port 31518.
  15. [Comment] Let's try another one!
  16. bandit16@melinda:~$ echo cluFn7wTiGryunymYOu4RcffSxQluehd | openssl s_client -quiet -connect localhost:31790
    depth=0 CN = localhost
    verify error:num=18:self signed certificate
    verify return:1
    depth=0 CN = localhost
    verify return:1
    Correct!

  1. Hey! I'm stuck in this level. Even the soltuion doesn't help me. When I try to enter bandit17 I get the following message:
    Permissions 0664 for './sshkey.private' are too open.
    It is required that your private key files are NOT accessible by others.
    This private key will be ignored.
    bad permissions: ignore key: ./sshkey.private

    I tried to fix this with chmod but when I try to log in again I need to enter a passphrase I don't know. Can someone help me?

  2. You need to CHMOD 600 "FILE" then try again

    ReplyDelete
  3. Nah. you need to copy the whole RSA key. that includes the
    ------- BEGIN RSA KEY -------

    as well as the

    ----- END RSA KEY -------

    bits.

  4. Is it necesarry to have extension .private in order to execute the command:
    #ssh -i ./sskey.private bandit17@localhost?
    Because i created as a keyphrase file, put the permisions 600, but i couldn't login into the machine, it was requesting me passphrase. So i just put the extension and then works, so the question is why?

  5. This level is all screwed up. It says to perform a diff on password.new and password.old. It gives you two strings and neither is the correct password. To get the pwd you have to do cat /etc/bandit_pass/bandit17
